Kabita Mewahang Rai

Kabita, 46, learned to weave Himalayan nettle from her mother and has practised the craft since she was 18 years old. Alongside agriculture, weaving remains central to her family’s livelihood and cultural identity. Her work is calm, measured, and deeply traditional, shaped by decades of experience and the quiet discipline of handmade craft.

For Kabita, weaving has always been tied to family. The knowledge she carries was passed down through generations, not in classrooms, but through observation, repetition, and trust.

In Bala, where the rhythm of life still follows the land and seasons, Kabita continues to preserve traditional nettle weaving while balancing agricultural work. Her craftsmanship reflects the steadiness of someone who has spent years refining a skill with care rather than speed.

"The loom teaches patience. Every thread asks you to slow down and pay attention."
