Gita Kulung

Kulung learned to weave Himalayan nettle fabrics from a very young age. Guided by an elder in her family, she gradually mastered complex traditional patterns and now creates a wide variety of woven designs entirely by hand. Her work represents years of quiet dedication and an intimate understanding of texture, balance, and rhythm.

For Gita, allo, also known as Himalayan nettle, has been part of life since childhood.

She recognises the importance of keeping traditional textile knowledge in practice, allowing the skills she learned from earlier generations to remain part of the present.

Through her weaving, Kulung continues a tradition that has shaped her family and community, bringing her own experience and dedication to the craft.

Her story reflects a simple but meaningful idea: traditional knowledge continues when people have the opportunity to practise it.

"''When I weave Allo, I am not only working for today. I am holding onto something our elders carried for us, so it can still be here for those who come after us.”"
