Kala Mewahang Rai: Young Loom Keeper

Kala, 26, is part of a new generation carrying Himalayan nettle weaving forward with quiet precision.

She began at sixteen, learning beside her elder sister. What started through observation became discipline, then skill, then a personal language of making.

Through Kala, Himalayan nettle is not only preserved. It continues.

Kala’s story begins beside the loom, where learning happened quietly through watching, listening, and repeating.

Over time, she came to understand the balance between fibre, tension, and pattern. Her work is rooted in family knowledge, yet shaped by her own growing confidence as an artisan.

There is a softness in her weaving, but also structure. A sense of youth, but also respect. Every piece reflects a craft that is not standing still, but continuing with grace.

"I learned by watching closely. Little by little, the loom became part of my life."
